Taking a Step Back...

Sometimes you need to take a step back to see the bigger picture.  North American culture promotes a high velocity in everything we do.  We want our food fast, work needs to be done faster, buying and selling should be fast, information needs to be right now.  As a result, we lose our depth and become 2 dimensional (I have talked about this before on other blogs).  The problem with 2 dimensional people is that they lack character and they seldom do anything outside of what the lizard brain or the rest of society tells them to do.  We are all guilty of this and thanks to our conformist, herd mentality, we don't have to be anything more than 2 dimensional.

Taking a step back in life can change your perspective.  You don't need to make earth shattering changes.  My latest change involves my morning shaving ritual.  I've decided to toss the Gillette 5 blade, all singing, all dancing, wonder of technology for this:

Yup, that's right, a straight razor.  Those of you who use straight razors will probably recognize that this is not the most expensive blade on the market and point is not to make this change for the sake of gaining cachet over my hairy faced peers.  The idea is to force myself away from the marketing, the hype, the sales pitch and to take more time doing something simple.  It's a type of re-boot for your brain.

Making huge changes in your life are difficult.  Hell, even the small changes can be a challenge.  But the smaller changes are more likely to stick and even though they might not change your life instantly, they can change your perspective and that ripple from a tiny adjustment can sometimes be the catalyst for something even bigger and better.
